-A PRIVATE SPACE FOR SURVIVORS OF TRAUMA-

MODEL-JON NOTINE

THE PRIVATE SPACE WAS DESIGNED AND FABRICATED AT PRATT INSTITUTE AS

THE FINAL PROTOTYPE FOR MY THESIS PROJECT IN THE

LAST SEMESTER OF THE MASTER OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN PROGRAM

A SPACE-SAVING 'SPACE' THAT USES THE TELESCOPING MECHANISM

TO COLLAPSE INTO A QUARTER OF ITS VOLUME SO THAT IT CAN BE PLACED IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS WITHOUT INTERFERING WITH THE FLOOR PLAN, WHICH MAY NOT ALLOW THE POSSIBILITY OF A PRIVATE POD

THE INTERIOR OF THE SPACE IS LINED WITH SOUND-ABSORBING MATERIAL. BY BLOCKING TRIGGERING STIMULUS, THE SPACE ACTS LIKE A TEMPORARY SHELTER TO RETREAT TO IN TIMES OF PANIC.

THE POLYCARBONATE PANELS FORMING THE ROOF ALLOW REFLECTED LIGHT INSIDE THE SPACE

ONCE CLOSED, IT CREATES A BARRIER BETWEEN THE USER AND THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT, GIVING  HER/HIM TIME TO MANAGE UNCONTROLLABLE EMOTIONS
